“Twilight” hasn’t even opened yet, and star Robert Pattinson is already famous.

Ever since news broke of his being cast as Edward Cullen, the romantic, eternally 17-year-old vampire hero of Stephanie Meyer’s global publishing phenom, the 22-year-old Brit’s been recognized wherever he went.

“It’s strange. It’s definitely changed things,” he said.

“It’s one of these phenomenons that come out of nowhere and everything about your career is completely different. The movie’s not even out yet and almost every day - because every 13-year-old girl in the entire country has read this - and you can almost guarantee wherever you go you’ll hear, ‘Oh my God! It’s Edward Cullen.’ ”

Pattinson’s first break was in his London high school’s production of “Our Town.”

“There was an agent there by fluke and I got ‘Vanity Fair’ playing Reese Witherspoon’s son.”

He ended up cut from the film, “because she was 27 at the time and it was ridiculous.”

That led to playing Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter [website] and the Goblet of Fire.”

Pattinson won the coveted “Twilight” role by making out with Kristen Stewart on director Catherine Hardwick’s bed in her Venice home.

Pattinson had read two scenes when Hardwick threw in her surprise.

“Then we just make out and I try and kill her. It was funny. I think I must have gone way over the top with it as well, because Catherine said I looked like I was having a seizure afterwards.”

Hardwick also saw the chemistry she wanted.

“There was definitely something there. I don’t know if it was chemistry or what,” Pattinson said. “But I definitely felt some kind of change. I felt something with Kristen when I was in there and that very rarely happens. I literally said ‘I want to do this part’ and sent an e-mail to Catherine and I read all the books in a weekend.”

“Twilight” opens Friday.
